Topic: Top 10 Mistakes Leaders Make & How HR Can Assist

Attendees will work with the identified challenges listed below potentially concerning their leaders and others within their organizations, to learn how they can assist with improving in these identified areas, which may include themselves (individual professional development) or others (training and professional development for leaders and staff).  This will be accomplished through a one hour training program which includes a lecture format plus small group activities with applicable workplace scenario examples.

  1. The ineffective leader avoids conflict – rather than developing the necessary skills to conduct coaching conversations or meaningful communications with employees.
  2. The ineffective leader wants to be friends with his/her employees – rather than working toward earning their respect.
  3. The ineffective leader is slow to make tough decisions on a timely basis – rather than making the difficult decisions to prevent the situation from worsening.
  4. The ineffective leader is not open minded to new ideas – rather than embracing new concepts and thoughts and not fearing change.
  5. The ineffective leader will not delegate important and critical responsibilities – rather than embracing input from other employees and not believing he/she is the only person who can “do it right.”
  6. The ineffective leader does not communicate regularly on important updates – rather than openly sharing and discussing organizational updates and expectations with his/her employees.
  7. The ineffective leader surrounds himself/herself with “yes” people – rather than listening and being open to diverse opinions which may be different from the leader’s.
  8. The ineffective leader does not see the value in documentation when it involves discipline – rather than documenting from the first sign of an issue, and, thereby, effectively preventing a solid paper trail when the inevitable termination arises.
  9. The ineffective leader does not display humility – rather than taking accountability for his/her choices and/ or decisions, yet, expecting his/her employees to project this trait.
  10. The ineffective leader never provides words of encouragement, support, or praise – rather than using words of action as powerful motivators for excellent performance by his/her employees.
